Project ‘Climate change education for a greener society: Raising awareness of the dangers of climate change and the impact of our actions on the environment’.

Climate change is one of the major global challenges of the 21st century. It threatens our planet, our lives and the ecosystems that surround us. To help communities become more aware of this issue, the NGO Change Human’s Life (CHL) has launched an environmental education project in the villages of Azito and Béago, in collaboration with the company AZITO O&M. The aim of this project is to raise awareness of the dangers of climate change, as well as the direct and indirect impacts of human actions on the environment.

Raising awareness of the importance of managing plastic waste

One of the project’s first initiatives was to raise awareness of plastic waste management among community leaders, shopkeepers and young people in the villages of Azito and Béago. Plastic waste is often abandoned in the countryside, with dramatic consequences for the environment. Participants were trained in selective waste collection, recycling and the importance of appropriate sorting to minimise plastic waste. The project also included a clean-up day in the streets and public spaces of the villages, enabling the population to become aware of the benefits of a clean environment.

Setting up a community structure for waste management

To ensure sustainable management of plastic waste, working groups were set up, made up of community leaders and young volunteers. The aim was to create a formal structure for collecting and selling plastic waste, which would have a dual benefit: helping to reduce pollution and creating a source of income for local residents. Rubbish bins were installed in public places, and training sessions were organised to teach young people about the importance of recycling and the economic opportunities it offers. This participatory model has enabled the villages of Azito and Béago to become exemplary examples of waste management.

Involvement of young people and women

One of the central aims of this project was to involve young people and women, two groups often under-represented in environmental initiatives.Training sessions and practical workshops were organised to raise their awareness of the challenges of climate change and show them how their everyday actions can help protect the planet. The young people were trained in recycling techniques, tree planting and eco-responsible initiatives. Their commitment is essential for a greener, more sustainable future, and was reinforced by concrete activities such as tree planting.

Corporate support

Another important aspect of the project was the collaboration with local businesses and recycling operators. The NGO Change Human’s Life set up a partnership with AZITO O&M, which provided financial and logistical support. Local businesses were invited to take an active part in the collection of plastic waste and to finance the setting up of waste drop-off points in the villages. This enabled the private sector to be involved in the fight for a cleaner environment, while at the same time creating economic opportunities for local people.

Results and impact of the initiative

At the end of the initiative, the results achieved were significant. Communities were made aware of the importance of managing plastic waste, with a positive impact on the sanitation of the villages of Azito and Béago. The project has received positive feedback from the local population, who have recognised the efforts of the NGO and its partners to create a cleaner, healthier environment. The young volunteers, trained throughout the project, are now ready to take over and continue these actions over the long term.

Difficulties and recommendations for sustaining the initiative

However, some difficulties were encountered during the implementation of this project. The lack of equipment, such as megaphones, limited the effectiveness of some awareness-raising activities. There were also delays in some activities. In order to sustain the gains made, the NGO recommends strengthening the material capacities of volunteer groups and communities, improving the funding of the initiative and raising public awareness of the harmful effects of pollution.

The ‘Climate change education for a greener society’ project has been a resounding success, thanks to the active involvement of communities, young people and women. The project has raised awareness among local people of the importance of managing plastic waste and the urgent need to adopt more responsible behaviour in the face of climate change. The NGO Change Human’s Life, in collaboration with its partners, continues to work towards a greener, more sustainable future by supporting communities in their transition to a more environmentally-friendly way of life.
